A painful ankle after running can indicate overuse injuries.

  • Training excessively, particularly for long-distance running, may lead to strained muscles and tendons, and stress fractures.
  • If muscle tears are overstretched over a period of time, becoming chronic, it can lead to tendonosis.

  • Tears can occur in the ankle tendons due to injury. Achilles tendon injuries – which usually start with pain in the area around the ankle and back of the heel – are common among runners.
  • Achilles tendonitis is a frequent occurrence in runners. Symptoms include ankle pain and inflammation around the Achilles tendon.
  • If you suffer an ankle sprain, you’ll feel sudden pain after twisting your ankle.
