twisting ankleTwisting of your ankle is so easy to do. An awkward movement can result in pain and prevent you from doing your normal activities.  If it has happened to you, then take a look at the twisted ankle treatment described below.

A sprained ankle happens when you twist or roll your ankle in an awkward way.  It can overstretch and even tear off one the ligaments around your ankle joint. It usually causes pain, swelling and bruising around your foot and makes it difficult for you to walk.

If you do sports twisting your ankle is not uncommon. Playing soccer for years, I sure have had my share of twisted ankles.

The aim of treatment is to reduce bleeding, swelling and pain around your ankle and also prevent long term stiffness and instability.

Treatment varies depending on the severity of the twist. Common methods of treatment include the following:

Twisted Ankle Treatment That Will Help You Feel Better

  • If you have twisted your ankle, it can help to wear high-top footwear such as walking boots to give your ankle extra support.  They shouldn’t be tight or cause discomfort.
  • If your ankle feels unstable, you may need to wear a brace or ankle support to prevent further injury.
  • In severe cases, a plaster cast may be applied to immobilize the joint temporarily while the ligament heals.

Avoid activities that aggravate your symptoms, but don’t rest completely.  You may need to use crutches if you’re having difficulty weight-bearing on the affected foot.

  • Applying ice regularly is a vital part of treating a twisted ankle, particularly in the first 24-48 hours after the injury.
  • Apply an ice pack or frozen bag of peas wrapped in a towel for 10-20 minutes several times across the day.
  • Consult your doctor if you have diabetesvascular disease, or decreased sensation, before applying ice.

Apply a compression bandage to help reduce swelling and provides support.  Don’t wrap it too tightly as this can restrict your blood circulation.

Gravity causes the blood and fluid from the inflammation to pool around your ankle and causes swelling.

  • To reduce swelling, keep your foot elevated, higher than the level of your heart to help drain excess fluid away.

  • Exercises and movement help prevent stiffness and weakness and restores your ankle’s range of motion, strength, flexibility, and stability. It also helps improve your circulation and speed up the healing process.
  • The level and type of exercises will depend on the severity of your injury.
  • Once the swelling and pain reduce enough to resume movement, your doctor will recommend a series of exercises for you.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen can be used to help reduce pain and inflammation. Make sure you talk to your doctor before taking them.

Physical Therapy

If you have a severe ankle sprain, you may need additional treatment. As well as an exercise program, a physical therapist may also do some additional manual therapy.

With a very severe ankle sprain, if physical therapy has failed to resolve persistent instability then surgery to repair the torn ligament will be considered.

A twisted ankle is a common injury. Treatment depends on the severity of the twist. Early treatment is vital to prevent ongoing problems of pain and instability.
