What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

You may have heard of carpal tunnel syndrome since it appears to be fairly common. It is a condition that causes pain, tingling, and numbness in the hand and arm. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway located in the wrist that is formed by carpal tunnel bones, aka small wrist bones. Through this small, rigid tunnel runs the median nerve, which is one of the main nerves in the arm, wrist, and hand.

So, when tissues around the flexor tendons swell, the tunnel becomes narrower, which applies pressure on the median nerve. These tissues, called the synovium, typically act to lubricate the tendons, which in turn allows you to easily move your fingers. But, when these tissues swell, they crowd the nerve, resulting in abnormal pressure. This is the then the pain you feel and associate with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Early diagnosis and treatment are especially important for carpal tunnel syndrome, as it usually worsens with time and age. Although most symptoms can be alleviated with the use of a brace and care, some patients may require surgery.


What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Such situations include talking on the phone for an extended duration, holding a book, or even driving.

I had this done to my ankle, and it was extremely painful. At first, the pain worsened for about a week before it felt relieved. But, it was only temporary and the painful symptoms came back in a matter of just a month or two. So, while a cortisone shot may help your situation, you should be aware that it affects everyone differently, and may end up being more painful than helpful. Consult your doctor.


Surgical Treatment

As a last resort, if all of these above treatments do not work, you can consider surgery. Surgical treatment may be recommended by your doctor in order to avoid irreversible damage. However, with surgery, there is always a greater risk of complications. So you should definitely review this option with much care.
