1. Analgesics

  • Analgesics such as aspirin and paracetamol are designed purely for pain relief. They may be safer if you are unable to take NSAIDs due to allergies or stomach problems.
  • Take them when you feel the pain starting.

 

2. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)

  • NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or naproxen are effective in relieving hip pain caused by inflammation.
  • Topical preparations, such as Voltaren Gel and Pennsaid can also be effective.

 

3. Corticosteroids

If your hip pain is due to rheumatoid arthritis or polymyalgia rheumatica, or an inflamed bursa, your doctor may prescribe corticosteroids.

 

4. Rest

  • Rest is important but only rest for a few days.
  • Begin some gentle exercise as soon as the pain begins to ease. This helps to restore your range of movement and ease stiffness. Start by exercising very gently and build up gradually.

 

5. Crutches

Crutches, or a cane, can be useful but they need to be fitted to your height to be effective.

 

6. Exercise

  • When the pain has gone, it’s important you continue to exercise on a regular basis. Exercise will help make the supporting muscles stronger and help maintain range of motion.
  • Stretching the muscles and tendons can also help relieve pain
  • Swimming and water aerobics are good exercises for your hip joints. Exercising in water allows you to strengthen your muscles without putting too much stress on your joints.

 

7. Ice

  • Icing a painful joint helps to reduce the inflammation and ease the pain.
  • Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the affected hip for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat four or five times daily.

 

8. Heat for Arthritis

Use a heating pad or natural stone heating mat if you have arthritis in your hips. This helps soothe the pain. A hot shower or bath will also help.

Don’t use heat, if you have bursitis as it can make this type of inflammation worse.

 

9. Lose Weight

The more you weigh, the more weight your painful hip has to support. Losing weight can help ease hip pain simply by removing some of the excess weight.

 

10. Wear the Right Shoes

  • Your shoes should give you as much support as possible. Look for shoes that have good cushioning.
  • The sole should have good shock absorption and evenly distribute pressure along the length of your foot.
  • Buy shoes with removable insoles so that you can add orthotic.
