neck and shoulder pain reliefNeck pain is a common complaint of people who must turn their head a lot during driving or who must hold their neck still while working on a computer.

Neck pain, left side, is particularly difficult to treat because you can’t really rest your neck unless you are lying down and your neck is well cushioned by a pillow.

Even then, the neck can stiffen up so you wake up with the same pain you had when you first laid down.

Neck Pain Left Side – For Initial Inflammation Relief

If you have just injured your neck, you should apply an ice pack to the affected side of your neck.  For example, if you have neck pain, left side, the ice pack should be applied on the left side of your neck.  You can use a premade ice pack you buy at the pharmacy or you can use a bag of ice from the freezer or a package of chopped vegetables or peas.

Ice should be applied for thirty minutes at a stretch and then the area should be allowed to rest for thirty minutes before applying ice again.  Put a towel between the ice and your skin so you don’t get frostbite.  This therapy should be used for 24 to 48 hours after the injury.

You can also use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications to control the inflammation of an acutely injured neck.  Ibuprofen, which is marketed as Advil and Motrin, or naproxen, which is marketed as Anaprox and Naprosyn, are both good choices for pain relief and for relief of inflammation in the neck. Always consult a doctor before taking medicine.

Heat Relief for Neck Pain, Left Side

After 48 hours, you may be left with ongoing stiffness and pain in the neck despite treatment with ice and NSAID therapy.  This is because the muscles can go into spasm.  It will be difficult to turn your neck from side to side and the neck muscles may be hard to the touch.

This is when heat therapy seems to help the best.  You can buy a heating pad to apply to your neck or use an advanced heating system such as a Jade Infrared Ray heat pad.  Health Line Company makes several of these pads that contain real jade discs and sometimes tourmaline and amethyst to provide a special kind of heat known as far infrared ray heat or FIR heat.

Far infrared ray heat works by going deep to the skin into the muscles—up to 2-3 inches deep to the skin.  This helps relieve muscle spasm in the deepest muscles so you can have faster relief of your pain.

Like ice, heat shouldn’t be applied continuously but must be put on in thirty minute intervals.  Between heat treatments, your neck should be allowed to cool down and you should practice range of motion exercises during that time.  After that, heat can be reapplied for thirty minutes again.

For neck pain, left side, there are several home remedies you can use to relieve the pain and muscle spasm.  If these don’t work after a few days, see a chiropractor or your doctor for further treatment, which could involve the use of muscle relaxants or chiropractic treatments.
