How to get rid of Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are often minimized and not enough attention is paid on getting rid of the pain.

While you can take over the counter or prescription pain relievers, there are a number of ways you can naturally get rid of the pain of tension headaches.

How to get rid of Tension Headaches

Here are a few natural remedies to get rid of tension headaches:

1. Use Cayenne Pepper

Using something this spicy might not sound like a way to stop headache pain, cayenne pepper is actually a good way of getting rid of headache pain.

Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, which gets rid of headache pain by depleting substance P, which is the brain’s natural pain-causing chemical.  Just take a fourth teaspoon of cayenne pepper and mix it with four ounces of warm water.

Soak a cotton swab in the mixture and stir it around to get the cayenne pepper on the swab.  Put the moistened swab on the inside of each nostril until the pain goes away.

2. Eat Some Nuts

Rather than taking pills for headache relief, chew on some nuts. Almond are a great choice to get rid of tension headaches.  They are a natural treatment and are healthier for you than medications.

It contains salicin, which is also found in over the counter painkillers.  Eat a handful or so of almonds when you first feel the headache coming on.

3. Eat Some Feverfew

Tension headaches can be relieved by using the feverfew plant.  It is especially good for migraine headaches because it relaxes and constricts the blood vessels, decreasing the pain of the headache.

Just take an ounce of dried or fresh feverfew flowers and mix it with a pint of boiling water. Steep this mixture for ten minutes and then strain it.  Drink the liquid for better pain relief.

4. Use Apple Cider Vinegar Compresses

These have long been used as natural remedies for tension headaches.  There have been some modern research studies showing its effectiveness in killing the pain of tension headaches but so far, there has been no proof that it works.   If you want to use apple cider vinegar compresses to get rid of tension headaches, see a qualified herbalist, who will help you decide if this is the treatment for you.

In the meantime, just mix a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar with about three cups of boiling water and a cup of cold water.  Pour the apple cider vinegar into a big bowl and fill it halfway with the boiling water.  Put a towel over your head, draping it over the bowl.  Hold your face over the mixture for 5-10 minutes or whenever the water begins to become too cold.

5. Try Some Exercise

Having a tension headache doesn’t seem like something you should be exercising for but it actually works.  It takes your mind off the pain of the headache and releases endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers.  Try to make exercise something you do routinely and not just when you have a headache.

Make sure you warm up properly and that you cool down enough after exercising.  Try exercising outside.  The fresh air and changing scenery will help you get rid of the pain of tension headaches without having to take expensive and possibly addicting medications.

Always consult your doctor before trying any home remedies.
