You can have many causes of hip pain, from an injury that causes hip pain to osteoarthritis, which is when there is “wear and tear” on the joint itself.

Hip pain can be felt in the groin area, which is the actual location of the hip joint.  It can also be felt in the outer aspect of the thigh.

Symptoms of Hip Pain

The symptoms of hip pain you have depend on what is causing your hip to hurt in the first place.  In fact, you may feel hip pain in any of the following areas:

  • In the area of your buttocks
  • In the area just outside of the hip joint itself
  • In the area of the groin
  • Just inside the hip joint
  • In the area of the thigh

Sometimes hip pain isn’t actually from the hip joint itself, but is instead a radiating type of pain that comes from things like a back injury or an injury to the groin, such as a hernia.  You might find that the hip pain worsens with activity, especially if osteoarthritis is the cause of your hip pain. Along with hip pain comes a decreased range of motion about the hip. The pain can be so bad that you develop a limp.

There are many things you can do to relieve the pain in your hip.  If the pain is the result of a strain in your tendons, tendinitis, osteoarthritis, or a muscle injury, you can take over the counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (marketed as Advil or Motrin) or naproxen sodium (marketed as Aleve or Naprosyn).  You can also take prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications if the over the counter medications aren’t effective. These block the inflammation in the hip joint.

You can also take acetaminophen (which is marketed as Tylenol) but this only addresses the pain and doesn’t do anything for inflammation.  You can take acetaminophen with any type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents as they do not mix badly with one another.

If your hip pain is from rheumatoid arthritis, you have other options for treating your pain. You can take prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, you can take corticosteroids, or you can take DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic agents).  Some of these include sulfasalazine and methotrexate.

You can also treat your hip pain through the application of ice.  You can put an ice pack on the affected area for about a half hour at a time.  Do this several times a day so that you can have pain relief throughout the day.

If you have osteoarthritis, you can partake in low-impact aerobic exercises, resistance training, or stretching exercises.  These can improve your joint mobility and can reduce your pain, while strengthening the muscles around the joint.  Swimming is a good exercise for osteoarthritis as it is low impact and won’t increase your hip pain.  You can also participate in physical therapy, where they will teach you exercises that can help reduce hip pain.

If over the counter medication, prescription medications and exercise do not work, you may have to have a total hip replacement, which is also called an arthroplasty.  This uses surgery to replace the injured joint as is used as a last resort when other measures fail.
