lower back painWhen you injure a muscle, the natural thing to do is to apply heat to relieve the pain and lessen the spasm of the muscle.

While you can drag out an old heating pad you have purchased from the drug store, you need to know that this type of heating pad just heats up the air and the surface of the skin, going very little into the tissues to where the muscle is located.

This is where infrared heating pads come in.

Do infrared heating pads work?

These types of pads are specially made to use far infrared ray heat or FIR heat that heats up the tissues of the skin to a depth of about 2 to 3 inches—deep enough to get to the muscles that are causing you discomfort.

Types of Infrared Heating Pads

Many infrared heating pads contain jade discs in them that are embedded in mesh and that heat up after you plug in the pad and turn it to the temperature you want the pad to be heated up to.  The jade discs soak up the heat and release it as far infrared heat deep into the tissues.

They also make infrared heating pads with tourmaline and amethyst crystals in them but they tend to be more expensive. The tourmaline and amethyst crystals give off negative ions, which have health benefits of their own.  The jade discs are embedded along with the crystals in a mesh and are heated with controllers to specific temperatures you get to decide.

Jade infrared heating pads come in a small variety that will fit in the small of your back, on your shoulder, or across your neck.  They also come quite large so you can actually lie directly on them, covering much of your body for overall infrared heating and the benefits of negative ions, if that’s the type of infrared heating pad you choose.

How Infrared Heating pads Work

Like any heating pad, infrared heating pads are run off of standard electrical outlets.  But do infrared heating pads work?   They have controllers, some of which are LED controllers, and are set up so you can just dial in the temperature you are looking for and put it on the painful part of the body.

It takes a few minutes for the deep heat to reach your spasmed muscles but about thirty minutes of infrared ray heat will ease muscle tension and lessen the amount of pain you experience when you are injured or aching.

Where to Get Infrared Heating Pads

Infrared heating pads may be available at your drug store but many people turn to the internet to purchase their infrared heating pad.  Amazon for example will sell you these types of heating pads to be delivered to your door in just days.

Infrared heating pads are more expensive than regular heating pads, costing somewhere in the range of $75 to $200, depending on what size the heating pad is and what the various components are on the heating pad.  This is a good investment, however, for those who have chronic pain and get a lot of use out of a heating pad.
