1. Recognize Your Triggers

Certain foods, drinks, or medicines can aggravate the condition. Notice the things that make your symptoms worse and keep a written log of them.  Common triggers include:



  • Drinks such as cola, coffee, tea, chocolate, and energy drinks contain caffeine.
  • Caffeine can reduce blood flow to your head, neck, and ears by constricting capillaries and other small blood vessels. This aggravates your tinnitus
  • If you suffer from tinnitus, you should limit your caffeine intake.



Alcohol plays a part in dilating your blood vessels which causes greater blood flow, particularly in your inner ear. This can aggravate the tinnitus. Therefore, it is advisable to reduce your alcohol consumption.



  • High salt intake can raise blood pressure, making your tinnitus worse.
  • If you are susceptible to the effects of sodium, you need to reduce your salt intake. Try to avoid adding salt at the table. Also, read labels on packaging and cans. Limit the amount of fast foods you eat as they often have a high salt content.



  • If you smoke, try to stop or at least reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke each day.
  • Tobacco makes tinnitus worse as it affects blood flow to the sensitive nerve cells in your ear. It also acts as a stimulant and can make the ringing in your ears seem louder.


If you suffer from chronic pain or another medical condition you may be taking aspirin regularly. If so and you suffer from tinnitus, you may need to limit the amount of aspirin you take. Talk to your doctor about alternative medication. Check labels on other over-the-counter medications as many of them contain aspirin.


2. Make Use of Natural Remedies

Including some of the following in your diet may help your tinnitus:


Ginkgo Biloba

This herb is considered to be very effective for tinnitus relief. It helps improve blood circulation to the neck, head and brain. This increased blood flow nourishes the nerves which improves the functioning of your ear and reduces ringing sensations.

It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can treat any underlying infection that may be contributing to your tinnitus.

Consult your doctor before starting the treatment as this herb may interact with certain medications.

Note: Ginkgo biloba should not be given to children.



Garlic helps improve blood circulation. It also reduces inflammation and has antibacterial properties that can help get rid of any infection that may be present.

Add garlic to your meals or take garlic capsules.


3. Manage Your Stress Levels

  • Stress can make tinnitus worse.
  • Plan time to relax every day.  Just 15 minutes of deep relaxation can ease stress and improve your mood.
  • Try relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, yoga,  tai-chi, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, or guided imagery.
  • Listen to calming music and sounds to help you relax.


4. Distract Yourself from the Tinnitus Noise

  • Tinnitus may bother you more when it’s quiet. Mask the noise by using a competing sound.
  • Try playing background music at a low volume or turn your radio dial between two stations to create soft static to help mask the noise from tinnitus.
  • The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association advises using a fan or white-noise machine as they dim the tinnitus noises.
  • Learn a hobby or craft that you find enjoyable. Being immersed in something you enjoy helps distract you from the sounds in your ears.

5. External Noise Management

Avoid exposure to loud noises and music.  Loud noises can be very painful when you have tinnitus as well as causing additional damage to your ears.

  • Keep music at a low volume when using earbuds. Don’t listen for more than 60 minutes at one time.
  • Wear ear plugs at concerts or other loud events.
  • Use ear plugs or earmuffs when using noisy machineries such as lawn mowers, power tools, or leaf blowers.


6. Get Enough Sleep

Tinnitus can disrupt your sleep, and feeling tired the next day makes the symptoms worse. Adopt good sleep hygiene measures 

Although tinnitus is not a serious life-threatening condition, it can still have a huge negative impact on your life. There is no cure for the condition so it’s something you have to learn to live with.
