5 Neck Pain Remedies

1. Apply some ice then heat

Ice is the simplest remedy that can be used to alleviate neck pain after an injury. The cold temperature helps to reduce the inflammation and the pain. Apply some ice over the neck to relieve the pain on the first 48 to 72 hours. Later, switch to heat therapy in the form of heating pads, hot compress or hot baths.

2. Exercise your neck

Exercising your neck not only helps to reduce the neck stiffness, it also strengthens and stabilizes your upper back.

2 types of exercises can help to ease the neck pain.

  1. Slowly move your neck in a circular motion both clockwise and anti-clockwise to stretch the neck muscles. If you feel any pain stop. This exercise can loosen up the neck muscles and help in the healing process, but be careful and go slow.
  2. Slowly stretch your neck by moving your head side to side and up and down.

Repeat each exercise for at least 5 times per set and do about 3 sets a day. However if these exercises causes too much pain, don’t continue them and consult your doctor.

3. Maintain a good posture

You can maintain a good posture by keeping your cervical spine in a neutral position. This can be achieved by using a chair with a good head rest. Maintaining a good posture will help to relieve the neck pain.

4. Take a salt bath

An Epsom salt bath can help to alleviate your neck pain in a number of ways. It gives you an instant pain relief by reducing the muscle tension and its stress. Epsom salt acts as a natural muscle relaxant which reduces the swelling and the pain.

All you have to do is add one to two cups of Epsom salt to a warm bath. Soak yourself in the warm bath especially the neck area for at least 15 to 20 minutes. This can be done daily until the neck pain goes off. However, it is best to avoid this therapy if you have got any heart disease, hypertension or diabetes mellitus.

5. Lavender oil and massage therapy

Lavender oil is very effective in pain relief particularly when it is used together with a massage therapy.  After taking a hot bath or shower, apply some lavender oil on your neck and shoulders. In small circular motions, apply gentle pressure to massage the affected area for about 10 minutes. Do not massage if this causes severe pain. You can continue this daily as needed.
