Some good home remedies for knee pain include the following:

1. Wear a Knee Brace

You can by a nylon and Velcro knee brace online. T he knee brace usually contains metal stays that support the knee and prevent the knee from bending.

The knee brace usually allows for mild bending of the knee but not so much that you can’t walk on it.

2. Apply Ice

Ice is especially good for newly injured knees.  Ice decreases inflammation in the joint so that the pain is less.

You can apply ice to the knee by applying a commercially made ice pack or by using a bag of ice from the freezer.  Even a bag of frozen vegetables can act as a good ice pack for the knee.

All you need to do is use a cloth or towel between the ice pack and your knee (to avoid frostbite to the skin) and keep the ice pack on for thirty minutes.

Then chill the ice pack in the freezer for another thirty minutes before applying the ice pack again.  Ice works to decrease inflammation any time the knee is inflamed but works best if you apply it within 48 hours of the injury.

3. Use Over the Counter Pain Relievers

Pain relievers that work the best for knee pain can be found at your local drug store or pharmacy.

You can choose from ibuprofen (marketed as Advil and Motrin) or naproxen sodium (marketed as Aleve and Naprosyn). Both of these medications are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications that act like aspirin to decrease pain through decreasing inflammation in the tissues.

It is possible that acetaminophen (Tylenol) will work as well but it has no anti-inflammatory properties so it works only by decreasing the pain.

Tylenol is especially good for people who have stomach ulcer problems or indigestion as it isn’t as hard on the stomach as the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications are.

Always consult a doctor before taking any kind of medication.

4. Using Capsaicin Cream

You can buy capsaicin cream at your local drug store or online for the management of knee pain.  Capsaicin is a substance that acts locally on painful areas of the body.

It deceases the amount of substance P in the tissues.  Substance P is a neurochemical that causes the sensation of pain.

Capsaicin is made from red hot chili peppers and doesn’t work immediately to relieve the pain. Instead, you can use it for a couple of weeks and then you’ll experience a decrease in the knee pain.
